Clear, balanced answers to the most common questions about homeopathy — what it is, how it works, whether it is safe and effective, and how to take homeopathic medicine.
About homeopathy
What is homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a system of medicine founded over 200 years ago by Dr Samuel Hahnemann, based on the principle of "like cures like" (similia similibus curentur): a substance that can produce symptoms in a healthy person is used in a highly diluted, potentised form to stimulate the body’s own healing response. Remedies are individualised to the whole person — physical, mental and emotional.
How does homeopathy work?
A homeopath selects a remedy matched to your complete symptom picture and gives it in minute, potentised doses, aiming to stimulate the body’s self-healing. It is a holistic, individualised approach — two people with the same diagnosis may receive different remedies. The precise mechanism is still scientifically debated.
Is homeopathy effective?
Many people in India and worldwide use homeopathy and report benefit, particularly for chronic and recurring complaints. Scientific evidence is mixed and debated, so for serious or acute conditions homeopathy should be used alongside — not instead of — conventional medical care. A qualified homeopath sets realistic expectations for your case.
Is homeopathy safe?
Homeopathic remedies are highly diluted and are generally well tolerated, with few side effects when prescribed by a qualified practitioner. The main safety concern is self-medication or delaying necessary medical treatment — so use homeopathy under professional guidance and not as a substitute for medical care in serious illness.
Does homeopathic medicine have side effects?
Because remedies are highly diluted, side effects are uncommon. Occasionally a brief, temporary aggravation of symptoms is reported. The bigger risk is relying on homeopathy instead of necessary medical treatment — always consult a qualified homeopath, and a doctor for serious or persistent conditions.
Is homeopathy scientific or officially recognised?
In India homeopathy is a recognised system of medicine under AYUSH, with statutory regulation and the BHMS / MD (Hom.) qualifications for practitioners. Internationally its scientific evidence base is debated. We present it as an individualised system many patients choose, used responsibly alongside conventional medical care.
Who founded homeopathy?
Homeopathy was founded by Dr Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, in the late 18th century.
Is homeopathy the same as Ayurveda?
No. Homeopathy ("like cures like", potentised micro-doses, founded by Hahnemann) and Ayurveda (India’s traditional herbal and lifestyle system) are different systems of medicine. Both are recognised under AYUSH in India.
Taking homeopathic medicine
How do I take homeopathic medicine?
Remedies are usually small sugar pills (globules) or liquid drops placed under the tongue and allowed to dissolve, in a clean mouth away from food and drink. Always follow your homeopath’s specific instructions on the remedy, dose and timing.
Should homeopathic medicine be taken on an empty stomach?
It is commonly advised to take remedies in a clean mouth, around 15–30 minutes away from food, drink and strong flavours such as coffee or mint. Follow your practitioner’s guidance, as instructions can vary.
Can I take homeopathy and allopathy (or Ayurveda) together?
In most cases homeopathy can be used alongside conventional or other medicines. Tell both your doctor and your homeopath about everything you take so your care is coordinated, and never stop or change prescribed medication on your own.
Can I take homeopathic medicine during pregnancy?
Many remedies are used during pregnancy under professional guidance, but always consult a qualified homeopath and your obstetrician before taking anything while pregnant or breastfeeding.
Does homeopathic medicine contain alcohol?
Liquid remedies and mother tinctures are often in an alcohol (ethanol) base; the sugar pills/globules are not. Tell your homeopath if you need to avoid alcohol so they can advise on the form.
Does homeopathic medicine expire?
Yes — remedies have a shelf life and a printed expiry date. Store them away from heat, direct sunlight, strong smells and moisture, and follow the label.
How long does homeopathic medicine take to work?
Acute complaints may respond quickly (within hours to days), while chronic conditions are treated gradually over weeks to months with follow-up. The timeline depends on the condition and how long it has been present; your homeopath will set expectations.
How are homeopathic medicines made?
They are prepared from plant, mineral or animal sources by serial dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking) to produce "potencies" such as 30C or 200C.
What is a mother tincture (Q) in homeopathy?
A mother tincture (marked Q) is the concentrated liquid extract of the source substance, from which higher dilutions and potencies are prepared. Some are also used directly under professional guidance.
What do 30, 200 and 1M potency mean?
They are different dilution levels (potencies) — higher numbers are more dilute and considered deeper-acting. The right potency is a clinical decision made by your homeopath for your individual case, not something to choose at random.
Homeopathy for conditions
Can homeopathy cure chronic diseases?
Homeopathy is often used for chronic and recurring complaints, aiming to reduce their frequency and severity and to treat the whole person. Results vary by individual and condition, and serious chronic diseases should be managed alongside medical care and monitoring.
Can homeopathy cure cancer?
No. Cancer requires proper oncology care (such as surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy as advised). Homeopathy may be used only as supportive care for general wellbeing alongside — never instead of — cancer treatment.
Is homeopathy good for children?
Homeopathic remedies are commonly and gently used for children’s complaints — teething, coughs and colds, recurrent infections — under a qualified practitioner. Always seek medical care for high fever, breathing difficulty or any serious symptoms in a child.
Should I stop my regular medicine if I start homeopathy?
No. Never stop or change prescribed medication on your own. Any change must be decided by your treating doctor; homeopathy is used alongside your existing care, not as an abrupt replacement.
How do I find a good homeopathy doctor?
Look for a qualified homeopath (BHMS / MD Hom.) with verified credentials, experience and genuine patient reviews. You can browse verified homeopathy doctors and clinics and book an online or in-clinic consultation on HomeoAxis.
